The
top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, Riyaz Naikoo, has been gunned down by the
security forces in a joint operation of the state police and the security
personnel in a South Kashmir village on Wednesday.
The deceased had come to meet his family and stayed overnight at a hideout in Awantipora’s Beighbora village. It was his home turf. The 32-year-old, also known by his alias Zubair ul Islam and Bin Qasim, was counted among Kashmir’s most-experienced terrorists.
On Tuesday, Kashmir Police’s
anti-militancy unit Special Operations Group (SOG) had pinpointed information
about his movements. He was going to meet his family and relatives. The
security personnel had a tip off in this regard.
Soon after getting information, a large contingent of Jammu and Kashmir police and the personnel of the 21 Rashtriya Rifles, launched massive manhunt and search operation by late evening on Tuesday. However the expected, gun battle erupted early on Wednesday wee hours.
The terrorists, Riyaz Naikoo, was however caught in the trap of the security personnel and killed during hours-long gun battle. Naiko’s dead body was recovered from a banker. “It is a major success for the security forces in Kashmir,” a senior Jammu and Kashmir Police officer said.
