Thousands of prisoners including under trial inmates have been released from various jails in Uttra Pradesh and Maharashtra to contain possible spread of Coronavirus among the inmates within the premises.

As per the media reports, the Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has asked for the release of nearly 11,000 convicted/under trial prisoners that were imprisoned for different offences. Those awarded punishments up to 7 years or less, with or without fine, are mainly being released to reduce overcrowding in prisons and reduce the risk of the spread of COVID 19.

The Supreme Court had in a recent order asked the state governments to work in this direction.

The Chief Justice of India, S A Bobde, in his recent order, said, "Each state shall constitute a high powered committee, it will determine which class of prisoners can be released on parole or interim bail for such period as may be appropriate".

Increasing number of Coronavirus cases over the past four days, despite nationwide lockdown imposed by the union Government, has again posed interrogations on the work style of state governments as well as people.

The total number of confirmed Coronavirus cases have been estimated stands at 830. Out of all, almost 67 patients were treated or discharged with required precautionary measures and almost 20 were have reportedly died of the disease.

Covid-19 has claimed lives of over 27,000 across the world, while more than 586,000 people are infected.
