A 26-year-old man, who was admitted at Bethany hospital here in Meghalaya, allegedly committed suicide in the early hours of Tuesday morning, a police official said.
The incident occurred a night after a senior doctor of the Bethany hospital has been tested positive for COVID-19 virus. The doctor is the first COVID-19 patient in Meghalaya, who has no travel history.
“The patient, who was admitted for detoxifying from drugs, allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the hospital and died on the spot,” a police official told UNI but on condition of anonymity.
The deceased has been identified as one Paimingstar Jyrwa of State’s South West Khasi Hills district.
Immediately, after the senior doctor tested positive for the deadly contagious disease, health department cordoned-off the hospital building.
East Khasi Hills district administration also clamped curfew for 48 hours across Shillong and adjoining areas from 600 hours on Tuesday.
