People from many areas of the region, including areas near the Line of Control in North Kashmir, remained disconnected on Thursday for the fourth consecutive day from the rest of the Valley. To restore traffic to these border areas, the snow removal campaign has not started yet.
Traffic has not started due to slippery roads and several feet of snow in the border towns of Keran, Keranah, Tangdhar and Machil, besides several Sadurvarti and remote villages of North Kashmir.
During this period, contact with the rest of the valley has been broken since November 14 due to the accumulation of three to four feet of snow on the roads in the neighboring city of Gurez and Bandipora.
An official of the police control room in Kupwara told us that several local and remote villages, including Machil, Keranah, Keran and Tangdhar, lost contact with other areas due to snowfall and slippery roads.
He said more than two to three feet of snow had accumulated in Sadhana Top, Farqian Pass and Jade Gali. The snow removal from the roads is likely to start on Thursday or Friday if the weather is dry.
A PCR official from Bandipora said that since November 14, Gurez is closed for movement of vehicles, the area is surrounded on three sides by Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Three to four feet of snow has accumulated in the Razdan Pass connecting Gurez, Neeru and several other areas along the Line of Control near Bandipora district headquarters. Traffic on the Bandipora-Gurez road is unlikely to be restored soon.
