Bypoll to Rajya Sabha seat for Tamil Nadu will be held on September 13, the Election Commission announced here on Tuesday.
The seat fell vacant after the demise of AIADMK leader Thiru A Mohammedjan on March 23.
While issuing the notification, the Commission said that the polling and counting will take place on September 13. “The last date of making nominations will be August 31 followed by scrutiny of nominations on September 1,” it stated.
Mohammedjan was elected as Rajya Sabha member in July 2019 and was also chairman of Tamil Nadu Wakf Board.
The Election Commission also issued certain guidelines in view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
As per the guidelines, every person shall wear a face mask during election-related activities with thermal scanning carried out before entering the premises.
It said sanitizers shall be made available at all locations and social distancing maintained as per the COVID-19 guidelines of the state government and Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Chief Secretary, Tamil Nadu is being directed to depute a senior officer from the state to ensure that the extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with while making arrangements for conducting the bye election.
